Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;birth 3 Review

score: 7.5/10

I couldn't really get myself to like this game as much as the 2 first ones. V_V

The battle system has become considerably different. In Re;birth 2, the amount of SP characters had were different and EXE drive attacks were seperate from SP attacks. However in Re;birth 3, every character had their SP capped to 1000 and the 2 types of attacks were merged into one. Also, increasing the EXE drive gauge would let me do more combo attacks. I found this very confusing at first...

The writing also felt... off. I know Neptunia is supposed to be a light-hearted series and that it takes palce in an alternative dimension, but the characters feel much less likeable and more like they all have something against each other. Neptune became unreasonably inconsiderate and Nepgear was constantly the butt of depricting jokes. Everything that made Neptune a lovable character has been reduced in this game.

Re;birth 3's localization isn't very good and is distant from the original Japanese script. Neptune uses an unbearable amount of slang and it feels very forced. Gratefully there is a retranslation patch you can find on Steam guides that fixes this ^_^

Despite everything I've said in this blog post, I didn't dislike every part of the game. I grew to love the new characters such as Plutia and I liked the battle system more than it was in the previous games. That being said, Compile Heart and Idea Factory could have done a bit better than this (/_< )
